Dermal Fillers, Guided by Imaging — Not Guesswork

The only way we place filler in the Heights: vessels mapped, previous filler located, product delivered to the exact tissue plane — all visible on screen in real time.

Ultrasound imaging showing dermal filler placement at PH Med Houston Heights

Why Guided Filler Is Different

Most filler in Houston is placed blind — the injector estimates what’s beneath the skin from surface landmarks. At PH Med in Houston Heights, every filler treatment is guided by real-time ultrasound. Before injecting, Dr. Bui maps your arteries and veins, locates any filler you already have, and confirms the exact plane your new product belongs in.

That changes everything about the result: safer placement away from vessels, no blind layering over old product, and contours that look natural because depth is confirmed — not assumed.

Surprising but true: many patients carry more previous filler than they realize. Layering new product over old, unseen filler is how migration, lumps, and overfilled features happen. Imaging finds it first. Read our complete guide to filler complications.

What Fillers Can Do

  • Volume restoration — cheeks, temples, and areas where structural volume has diminished.
  • Contour and definition — jawline, chin, and facial balance, placed at precise depth.
  • Lips — shape and proportion that fits your face.
  • Correction work — assessing and addressing filler from previous providers, including ultrasound-guided dissolution when product needs to come out before anything new goes in.

Your Appointment

  • Scan before syringe. Every visit starts with an ultrasound assessment — including filler from other providers.
  • See your own anatomy. You watch the screen with Dr. Bui and understand exactly what’s recommended and why.
  • Guided placement. Product is delivered to the confirmed plane, with vessels in view the entire time.
  • Honest scope. If something falls outside what we treat, we say so and refer you to the right specialist.

Common Questions

Does ultrasound guidance add time or cost surprises?

Mapping adds only minutes to the visit, and most patients say watching their own anatomy on screen is the most reassuring part of the appointment.

Can you check filler I got somewhere else?

Yes — an ultrasound assessment shows where previous filler sits, how much remains, and whether it has migrated. The more treatment history you can share, the more complete the picture.

What if I have a problem with existing filler?

That’s a core part of our practice — start with our filler complications guide. And if you ever believe you’re experiencing a medical emergency, seek emergency care immediately.

What Ultrasound Actually Shows Us

A facial ultrasound takes minutes and changes the entire treatment. On screen, Dr. Bui can see:

  • Arteries and veins — mapped in real time, so product is placed away from them rather than near where they’re assumed to be. Vascular events are the most serious filler complication, and this is the direct mitigation.
  • Existing filler — hyaluronic acid appears as dark (anechoic) pockets. Many patients are surprised to learn how much product from years past is still present.
  • Tissue planes — the specific layer product should occupy for the result you want. Superficial when it should be deep looks lumpy; deep when it should be superficial does nothing.
  • Migration — product that has travelled from where it was originally placed, which is the usual cause of that puffy, “not quite right” look under the eyes or around the mouth.

Areas and What Filler Can Do

Structure & Volume

  • Cheeks and midface — restoring the support that flattens with age, which lifts everything below it.
  • Temples — a hollow that quietly ages the whole upper face.
  • Jawline and chin — definition and profile balance, placed on bone where it belongs.

Detail Work

  • Lips — shape and proportion suited to your face, not a template.
  • Nasolabial and marionette folds — often better addressed by treating the cheek support above them than by filling the fold itself.
  • Under-eye (tear trough) — the highest-risk, least-forgiving area on the face, and the one where imaging matters most. Sometimes the honest answer is that filler is the wrong tool and PRF or a different approach is better.

How Long It Lasts — Honestly

Manufacturer ranges quote six to eighteen months depending on product and area, but real duration depends on where product sits, how much movement the area sees, your metabolism, and how much filler you already had. Lips move constantly and turn over faster; deep cheek and jawline placement lasts longer.

The more useful measure is not “how long does it last” but “what is actually still in there.” That’s a question only imaging can answer — and it’s the reason we scan before every treatment rather than layering on assumptions.

More filler is not the answer to filler that looks wrong. If your face feels heavy, puffy, or subtly off, the correct first step is an assessment, not another syringe. Read our guide to filler complications or learn about ultrasound-guided dissolution.

Before and After Your Treatment

Before

  • Avoid blood thinners and alcohol for 24 hours where medically appropriate.
  • Bring your treatment history — products, areas, approximate dates. The more we know, the more complete the picture.
  • Schedule at least two weeks before any major event.

After

  • Swelling and occasional bruising for a few days; lips swell the most.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise and heat for 24–48 hours.
  • Final result settles at about two weeks — that’s when we assess, not before.
  • Contact us promptly about unusual pain, blanching, or vision changes. If you believe you’re experiencing a medical emergency, seek emergency care immediately.

Why Neighbors in the Heights Choose PH Med

PH Med was built on a simple conviction: aesthetic medicine should be held to a medical standard. That means a physician — not a technician — performing every treatment. It means imaging on the table, not intuition alone. And it means honest scope: when something falls outside what we treat, we say so and refer you to the right specialist.

That standard shows up in what patients say — over a hundred five-star Google reviews and counting from the Heights and greater Houston. It shows up in how plans are built: single treatments where a single treatment is right, and sequenced, stacked protocols where combining modalities delivers more than any one alone. And it shows up in the consult itself, which begins with your goals and your anatomy — never with a sales script.
